Bacteriophage P22, computer model
Bacteriophage P22. Computer model of P22 created with molecular modelling software and data from cryo-electron microscopy. Bacteriophages are viruses that only infect bacteria. P22 infects Salmonella enterica. The virus 'head' (blue, green), is a protein shell, known as the capsid, that contains DNA. The 'tail' of the virus is orange. P22 contains a group of proteins, known as a portal, that act as a molecular motor. The portal powers the packaging of DNA within the virus and the injection of DNA into a host cell. P22 is also used as a tool for genetic research as it can inject foreign DNA into its host. Cryo- electron microscopy images specimens kept at minus 150 degrees Celsius.
