Faecal samples for bowel cancer DNA screening
Genetic testing for bowel cancer. Row of vials filled with extract of human faecal material, ready to be genetically screened in a ras gene bowel cancer study. In the background a researcher is seen pipetting samples. These faecal samples will yield cells which are shed naturally from the surface of the bowel (colon). The DNA of these bowel cells is then examined. The genetic testing involves identifying mutated sequences of the ras gene, the gene found in 40-50% of bowel cancers.
