Transplanted kidney, Doppler ultrasound
Transplanted kidney. Colour Doppler ultrasound scan of venous (blue) and arterial (red) blood flow in a transplanted kidney in a 48-year-old woman. The kidney is seen as the darker oval shape that fills nearly the whole scan. Transplantation replaces a failed, or failing, kidney with a donor kidney. The body's two kidneys filter nitrogenous waste (mostly urea) from the blood, excreting it in urine. Colour Doppler ultrasound scanning colour-codes moving fluids, such as blood, by detecting the frequency change they cause when reflecting high-frequency sound waves. Flow towards (red) and away (blue) from the detector can be shown.
