Bacterial infection of lung
Pulmonary infection. Illustration showing an infected lung and pathogenic bacteria. The spheres represent cocci (spherical bacteria) such as staphylococcal & streptococcal species. These can cause bronchitis and pneumonia. The blue, green & red bodies represent bacilli (rod-shaped bacteria) such as the organisms which cause tuberculosis and whooping cough. Here, the right bronchus is cut away revealing inflammation & infected sputum and pus (yellow). Pus is also present in the lobes of the lung (pneumonia). Such inflammation can cause coughing, difficulty in breathing, pain and fever. Treatment of bacterial infection of the lungs is with antibiotics such as penicillin.
