Flowering heads and leaves of Cannabis sativa
Marijuana. Close-up of a several flowering heads of Cannabis sativa. These are amongst the most potent parts of the plant. The plant is widely (though illegally) used as a euphoriant and relaxant drug. It is commonly smoked, either rolled with tobacco in a joint, or by itself in a pipe. The active ingredient is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). When smoked, the effects of the drug occur within a few minutes. These include relaxation, a slowing of time, and increased imagination. The drug has also been used medicinally (although still illegally) to relieve the symptoms of chronic disorders such as multiple sclerosis.
