Doctor using a bronchoscope to examine the trachea (windpipe) and bronchi of his patient. The bronchi are the larger branches of the bronchial tree, the network of airways in the lungs that culminate in the alveoli (airsacs). The division of the trachea into the left and right bronchi is a common site for the development of carcinoma of the bronchus - more usually referred to as lung cancer. A bronchoscopy examination might be required to confirm the presence of such a cancer. The endoscope affords the doctor a view down these airways and the option of removing samples of tissue (or foreign bodies) with the aid of long forceps inserted down the metal tube.
