Anaethetist preparing for surgery
MODEL RELEASED. Anaethetist preparing for surgery. The patient lies on the operating table, with their head on the pillow. During the surgery, a general anaesthetic keeps the patient unconscious, and so prevents pain and discomfort during the operation. The general anaesthetic is usually inhaled through a face mask. Once anaesthetised, the patient is unable to breathe unaided. The tube (pink) is providing air for the patient, as well as maintaining the state of anaesthesia. The tray (lower centre) contains injectable drugs that the anaesthetist (left) can use to help maintain the anaesthesia or revive the patient. The surgeon at right is preparing to disinfect the area being operated on. Photographed in the UK.
