Cultured Cryptococcus fungus
Cryptococcus fungus. Culture of Cryptococcus neoformans fungus growing in a petri dish. Each spherical blob is a separate colony of the yeast- like fungus. C. neoformans causes cryptococcosis, a rare infection that affects people with a deficient immune system, such as those with AIDS or who are taking immunosuppressive drugs, for example after an organ transplant. C. neoformans is particularly common in soil contaminated by pigeon droppings. It may be inhaled into the lungs where it causes pulmonary disease. It can disseminate to other areas of the body, most commonly causing cryptococcal meningitis after it has spread to the brain.
