Healthy chest X-ray
Healthy chest X-ray. Coloured frontal X-ray of the chest of a healthy baby during inhalation (breathing in). The ribs are seen as a set of horizontal bands enclosing the lungs (dark areas either side of the spine), and the heart (pink mass, lower centre). During inhalation the ribs move up and to the sides to allow the lungs to expand and fill with air. The spinal column runs vertically down from the head (not seen). Chest X- rays are taken to diagnose diseases such as pneumonia, tuberculosis and lung cancer. These would show up as abnormal, shaded areas over the lungs.
