Dome of the US Naval observatory in Arizona
US Naval Observatory dome. View of the dome at the US Naval Observatory's Flagstaff Station which houses the 1.55 metre Kaj Strand reflecting telescope. This telescope is the largest operated by the US Navy. It was completed in 1964, and takes its name from the US Navy's Scientific Director of the time. It is designed to provide extremely accurate positional data for stars, and also measures their parallax (their apparent movement against the background due to the Earth's movement), which is proportional to their distance from Earth. Over 1000 accurate stellar distances have been found in the telescope's first 35 years. Photographed near Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.
