Ares Valles, Mars, artwork
Ares Valles, Mars. Artwork of the Ares Valles area of Mars. The sun and the Milky Way can be seen on the right. Ares Valles is an outflow channel carved into the surface of Mars by ancient catastrophic floods. The floods were most likely caused by huge discharges of groundwater at the start of the outflow channels. On 4th July 1997, NASA's 'Pathfinder' spacecraft and rover 'Sojourner' landed on the Ares Valles area of Mars.
