Jupiter from Io. Artwork of the planet Jupiter on the horizon as seen from Io, one of its moons. Io is the third largest of the moons of Jupiter, and the nearest to the planet. Jupiter is the largest and most massive body in the solar system apart from the Sun. Its powerful gravitational field creates huge tidal forces on Io, which power the large volcanoes present on the moon's surface. These are in constant eruption, and can eject matter over 100 kilometres into space. Io was discovered in 1610 by Galileo, and is called a Galilean satellite in his honour.
