Hubble X nebula
Hubble X nebula. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image of the Hubble X nebula, a large starbirth region in the nearby galaxy NGC 6822. Hubble X is a huge cloud of gas and dust in which gas is condensing to form stars. Radiation from the hot young stars created in this process ionises some of the remaining hydrogen gas, causing it to glow. The bright region here is around 110 light years in diameter. Several new stars (white) are seen against the green glowing gas. NGC 6822 is a small irregular galaxy which is part of the Local Group of galaxies which includes our Milky Way. It lies around 1.7 million light years from Earth.
