Tadpole nebula (IC 410)
Tadpole nebula (IC 410), optical image. This is a starbirth region, a huge cloud of glowing gas surrounding a cluster of stars that recently formed from it. The cluster, called NGC 1893, is concentrated at lower centre. Ultraviolet radiation from these hot young stars ionises the hydrogen gas left over from their formation, causing it to emit red light. The tadpoles of the nebula's name are at lower left. These are dense globules of gas and dust in which new stars are forming. Radiation pressure from the cluster has blown away much of their surrounding material, giving them long tails on the side facing away from the cluster.
