Colliding galaxies Arp 148, HST image
Colliding galaxies Arp 148, Hubble Space Telescope (HST) image. Also known as Mayall's Object, this structure is the result of a collision between two galaxies. The result of the collision was an elongated galaxy (left) and a ring-shaped galaxy (right), the two shapes caused by the shockwaves produced by the collision. Arp 148 is 500 million light years from Earth, in the constellation of Ursa Major. This image was published in 2008.
