Power station which burns lignite
Power station. Dusk view of a power station which burns lignite coal (brown coal) to generate electricity. Its two chimney stacks have red aircraft warning lights on them, whilst water vapour is rising from the cooling towers behind them. Lignite is mined from rock strata that are generally geologically younger than those that contain black coal. Compared to black coal, lignite has a higher content of water and volatile substances, and less carbon. Lignite releases less heat than black coal when burned, but it is widely used because of the substantial deposits of it around the world.
