Filtering of perfume essence using filter papers
Perfume manufacture. Perfume essence being filtered to remove solid residue. There are various ways of making perfume. Distillation is often used to extract the volatile oils or essences from the crushed flowers and leaves of certain plants. In Grasse, the perfume centre of Provence where this photo was taken, a technique called enfleurage is used. Flowers are laid in frames on layers of purified tallow and lard. The fat absorbs the oils from the flowers, producing a material called pomade. The fat is removed by adding alcohol, leaving just the oils in the alcohol solution, ready to be blended.
