Magnificent sea anemone
Magnificent sea anemone (Heteractis magnifica), close-up. This animal is usually found attached to objects such as coral boulders. Its body is composed of many blunt tentacles (green) attached to a column (purple). The tentacles are used to catch food. They possess stinging cells (nematocysts) that paralyse the anemone's prey, which is then pushed into a digestive cavity inside the body. The magnificent anemone is found in tropical waters from French Polynesia to East Africa and from Australia to the Ryukyu Islands. Photographed off Komodo, Indonesia.
