Medicinal maggots
Medicinal maggots. Greenbottle maggots (Lucilia sericata) being grown in bottles for medicinal use. They are growing on a sterile growth medium before being tested for clinical sterility. These maggots are used to clean wounds. They secrete enzymes which only break down dead and damaged tissue, leaving healthy areas untouched. Their secretions also reduce the risk of the wound becoming infected by bacteria. The maggots treat wounds far more efficiently than is possible with drugs or other methods. They are used for cleaning necrotic or infected wounds such as burns, pressure sores, leg ulcers and abscesses.
