Giant clam
Giant clam (Tridacna sp.). The 'mouth' of the clam (blue) is at lower centre. The giant clam is the largest living bivalve mollusc, and the shells of mature individuals can reach 1.5 metres in length. The giant clam can filter microscopic plants and animals from the water, but it obtains most of its food from photosynthetic symbiotic algae which live in its tissues. Giant clams are found in the tropical Indo-Pacific oceans.
