King penguins
King penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) walking past a male southern fur seal (Arctocephalus australis) on their way to the ocean. These birds are very social, living and breeding in large colonies. They feed on small fish and squid, diving below the surface of the water to catch their prey. They often hunt in groups, the older birds directing others to the best feeding grounds. King penguins are found in the sub- Antarctic and on cool islands in temperate areas of the southern hemisphere. This seal does not eat penguins, but during the breeding season the male rigorously defends his territory on the beach. Photographed on the island of South Georgia.
