Boobies
Boobies. Booby (Sula sp.) watching her chick as it is approached by a young boy. Boobies are seabirds that are found worldwide. They nest on bare ground at the top or on the sides of cliffs, using gravity to help them attain full flight. They are large birds, with a wingspan in excess of 1.5 metres. Usually two chicks are born, but the larger chick generally kills the smaller within a few months of their birth. Boobies feed by plunge-diving: flying over the sea until they see a shoal of fish, then falling on it from dozens of metres up to catch fish in their beaks. Photographed on New Caledonia, South Pacific.
