Kittiwakes mating
Kittiwakes mating. Unidentified kittiwakes (Rissa sp.) mating on a cliff. The kittiwakes are small gulls which live on the open sea for much of the year, coming ashore only to breed. The nest consists of mud, grass and seaweed, tightly trampled together. It is usually placed on a small ledge on coasts in the Arctic, North Atlantic and North Pacific. After mating, the female lays one or two eggs in the nest.
