However horizontal gene transfer (HGT, dark blue) is the primary mechanism for the spread of antibiotic resistance in bacteria. In this process bacteria receive resistance genes through horizontal plasmid transfer, where plasmids (fragments of DNA - green circles) are acquired from other bacterial cells.
