Nerve ganglion cells, light micrograph
Light micrograph of the cells in a nerve ganglion which make up part of the peripheral nervous system. The ganglion cell bodies are characteristically large with large nuclei and large nucleoli. So, as in this picture, the cell bodies are seen as large circles (the cell cytoplasm) containing a smaller circle (the nucleus) which itself contains a large dot (the nucleolus). In between the several ganglion cell bodies is connective tissue (the light pink substance with many elongated/spindle shaped blue nuclei) and scattered blood vessels (red blood cell filled structures). Haematoxylin and eosin stained tissue section. Magnification: 200x when printed at 10cm., by ZIAD M. EL-ZAATARI/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
