Anthracosis and thyroid goitre
Gross specimen showing human lungs, heart, trachea and larynx. The lungs show dark-blue pigmentation (anthracosis), a disease caused by urban air pollution or tobacco smoke. Anthracosis occurs when the lung's capacity to remove coal particles is exceeded and the dust accumulates. Under the thyroid cartilage, the thyroid gland is very enlarged (goitre)., by JOSE CALVO / SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
