Radiation fog, illustration
Illustration of radiation fog in a valley. Radiation fog occurs mostly in winter in calm conditions. It forms overnight as the land cools, cooling the air just above it and reducing its ability to hold moisture, The moisture condenses out of the air, forming a layer of fog. It dissipates the next morning as the sun warms the air., by KARSTEN SCHNEIDER/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
