Extinct sperm whales, illustration
Illustration of extinct sperm whales (Livyatan melvillei) which lived during the Miocene epoch, approximately 12-13 million years ago. L. melvillei was around 15 metres long, similar to a modern adult sperm whale and the skull was around 3 metres long. Unlike the modern sperm whale, L. melvillei had large, fully functional teeth in both its upper and lower jaws., by A. JAMES GUSTAFSON/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
