Machairodus sabre-toothed cats, illustration
Illustration of two sabre-toothed cats (Machairodus aphanistus) in late Miocene Spain. This species lived from 11.63 to 5.33 million years ago throughout North America, Eurasia and Africa and was comparable in size to modern tigers. The leg structure inferred from Machairodus fossils suggests that members of this genus were ambush predators., by MAURICIO ANTON/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY
