Norwegian scabies: scabies rash on the arm of a person suffering from AIDS. Scabies is a skin infection caused by the itch mite ^IS^Sarcoptes ^I^Sscabiei^i. The infection is typified by severe ^Sitching, particularly at night, due to secretions ^Sfrom the burrowing mite. Female mites burrow under ^Sthe skin to lay their eggs; on hatching the young ^Smigrate rapidly from person to person by contact. ^SThe mites are killed by treatment with ^Shexachlorophane or benzyl benzoate lotions applied ^Slocally. Scabies is especially severe in AIDS ^Sbecause the sufferer lacks a viable immune system with which to fight off the infestation.
