k Temple of Apollo, Stourhead, Wiltshire, c19551980. Creator Ursula Clark. Temple of Apollo, Stourhead, Wiltshire, c19551980. View of the garden lake in the grounds of Stourhead House, with the Temple of Apollo in the distance and a stone urn in the foreground, seen from a bank on the east of the lake and north of the temple. The image shows a bank of the lake in the foreground with a steep bend in the bank, creating a wide body of water in front of the hill that the temple sits on. At the base of the hill are a few people on a path and foliage that extends to the top of the hill. The Temple of Apollo is in a clearing at the apex and is a circular building on a plinth with eight steps, built in 1765. The design is based on a temple in Woods Ruins of Baalbec, which was published in 1757. The temple is surrounded by Corinthian columns that support scalloped mouldings and a domed roof. Each bay sround the temple has a niche with circular oculus which had lead statues that were moved to the house in 19031904. The house and grounds are now cared for by the National Trust.
