St. Martins le Grand was a former parish and liberty within the City of London, The church was founded c1056 by two brothers called Ingelric and Girard, during the reign of Edward the Confessor 10421066. The foundation was confirmed by a charter of William the Conqueror 10281087 dating from 1068. The church was responsible for the sounding of the curfew bell in the evenings, which announced the closing of the Citys gates. It was dissolved by King Henry VIII 14911547 and demolished in 1548.
