Winter Palace and River Neva, Leningrad, 20th century. Official residence of the Russian monarchs 1732 to 1917, was constructed on a monumental scale intended to reflect the might and power of Imperial Russia. Most notably designed by architect Bartolomeo Rastrelli, in what came to be known as the Elizabethan Baroque style.
