Muon neutrinos made at the laboratory will collide with nuclei in the oil, creating charged particles. The particles will generate characteristic blue flashes of Cerenkov light to be detected by the 1220 photomultipliers on the walls. The experiment may help to discover masses for the three types of neutrino (electron, muon, tau) and help explain their properties. It is thought that neutrinos may spontaneously change from one type to another.
