False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus (orange), a species of non-motile, non-sporing, Gram-negative bacteria. The species is found in soil, water, sewage, & in hospital environments - in respiratory & urinary drainage equipment, disinfectants & body fluids. It can cause urinary infections or septicaemia when it gains access to the body through catheters or other invasive techniques. Persons particularly at risk are the very young (from meningitis), the elderly, & people whose immune systems are deficient. Treatment is by antibiotics such as the aminoglycosides, carbenicillin, & cotrimoxazole. Magnification: x2000 at 35mm size.
