Freeze-fracture transmission electron micrograph of a yeast cell, Rhodosporidium toruloides. The large round structure at the bottom of the central cell is a lipid body. Lipids consist of glycerol and fatty acids. They serve as reservoirs for potential chemical energy and as sources of short carbon chains for the synthesis of membranes and other lipid containing components or excretory products. The aspherical shape, above & right of the lipid and containing a dark spot, is the cell's nucleus. The curved elongated structure at right is one of the mitochondria, the organelles which produce energy within the cell. Magn: x39,000 at 250x215mm , x10,924 at 6x7mm size.
