Fungus sporangiophores. Macrophotograph of three sporangiophores of a Pilobolus sp. fungus, growing on dung. A sporangiophore is a fruiting body formed on a specialised hypha, at the end of which is a sporangium (brown). The sporangium is a sac- like container for fungal spores. When the spores are mature, the sporangium breaks, releasing the spores. The term Pilobolus means 'hat-thrower', referring to this spore discharge. This fungus typically grows on horse manure.
