The reproductive spores, clustered here to form a cap, are ready to disperse in the air. When they land on a favourable medium, they germinate to produce a network of hyphae (thread-like structures), which absorb food for growth and spore production. A sporangium grows at the end of a specialised hyphae called a sporangiophore. In this mature sporangium the wall enclosing the spores has disintegrated, enabling the spores' dispersal.
