False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of two species of blue-green algae, Microcoleus and Anabaena sp. The large cylindrical algae are Microcoleus, the small, bead-like string of cells is Anabaena. Blue-green algae get energy directly from sunlight, converting it into a chemically usable form by means of photosynthetic membranes (chloroplasts). Anabaena also contains specialised cells called heterocysts which help to fix atmospheric nitrogen in the soil. Anabaena is therefore valuable to farmers since it increases soil fertility & crop yields. Magnification: x1750 at 6x4.5cm size.
