Buttress roots on an unidentified tree in the Nariva freshwater swamp, Trinidad. The roots arise from the trunk above soil level, radiating out in all directions and resembling the buttresses used in building technology. They serve to stabilise the tree in the marshy, unstable mud of the swamp.
