Light micrograph of a germinating pollen grain of the lily Lilium (Liliaceae). Once this pollen, which contains the male gametes, has landed on the female stigma of the flower, it germinates. A tube (seen here) grows out from the pollen grain, down through the stigma to the ovary. The male nuclei pass down this tube, fertilize the ovules and a seed is formed.
