Every species of flowering plant produces pollen with its own unique structure and shape; these pollen grains have a sculpted, knobbled protein coat. Pollen grains carry the male gametes of a plant, necessary to fertilize the female ovules to create seeds. The protein coat of pollen grains such as Artemisia sp. interacts with the nasal lining, eyes and throat of allergic individuals provoking an inflammatory reaction.
