Egypt, satellite image. North is at top. Egypt is the most northeastern country in Africa. It borders Libya to the west, Sudan to the south and Israel and the Gaza Strip to the northeast (all shaded). The majority of Egypt's population live in the fertile areas surrounding the River Nile, whilst much of the west of the country is empty desert. The Nile flows from the south through Egypt into the Mediterranean at the Nile Delta (top). Cairo, Egypt's capital city is situated on the Nile immediately south of its Delta. Due east of Cairo is Suez at the mouth of the Suez Canal. This canal provides the trade route that link the Mediterranean with the Red sea.
