In the left of the frame is an air sampling probe, situated at the top of the laboratory's tower. The main laboratory building is in the centre of the site (white building just right of centre frame). The dark colouration in the surrounding landscape is due to the lava flows which constitute the 'soil' here. CMDL is run jointly by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography of San Diego.
