Neanderthal man. Model of a neanderthal man (Homo sapiens neanderthalensis) dressed in modern clothing. Neanderthals were early humans that lived in Europe and the Middle East about 120- 30,000 years ago. When dressed in modern clothes this man bears some resemblance to a modern man in appearance. Neanderthals' brains were slightly larger than ours, being up to 1750 millilitres in volume. They used tools to make weapons and build homes. The first neanderthal skeleton was found in the Neander Valley, Germany. This model, from an exhibition by Nordstar, was photographed at the Naturkundemuseum in Stuttgart, Germany.
