Fossil coral, Cyathophyllum articulatum, showing a number of corallites (the tubes which each held a polyp animal). The corals of the cosmopolitan Devonian genus Cyathophyllum are characterised by large, conical corallites with numerous thin septa, of which the main ones extend almost to the centre They can be solitary or joined together in massive colonies. This specimen is from the Silurian period, approximately 425 million years ago, and was found at Much Wenlock, Shropshire in the U.K.
