Megatherium. Artist's impression of Megatherium, an extinct species of giant sloth. Megatherium was about the size of an elephant, and inhabited the shrubby savannas of America. The genus evolved several million years ago, but is thought to have become extinct as recently as the Holocene Period 12,000 years ago. It was, therefore, contemporary with early man. Megatherium was herbivorous, plump and clumsy. It had huge claws and would have been able to stand on it's hind legs to reach for tall vegetation.
