Camel caravan in Western Tenere Desert (Sahara), Niger. Dromedary camels (one-humped) are here typically seen as beasts of burden. Caravans travel comfortably at a speed of 4km per hour, with a daily performance of about 20km per day. In this process a camel may lose a fourth of its body weight in the blazing sun without being in danger of death from thirst. This caravan is travelling at around midday across plains in which changing winds have flattened the sand of dunes. The mirages on the surface of the sand are optical phenomena (giving the appearance of water) that occur as a result of the bending of light through layers of heated air.
