Hypothermia treatments, illustration
Hypothermia treatments, illustration. From left to right, three forms of treatment for mild, moderate and severe hypothermia. Hypothermia is a dangerous drop in core body temperature. In severe cases, it can be fatal. Mild hypothermia is treated by covering the patient to keep them warm (passive external rewarming). Moderate hypothermia is treated by applying warmth (active external rewarming), as in the heating blanket shown here. Severe hypothermia is treated by supplying warm fluids intravenously (active internal rewarming), as shown here.
