Moscow, seen from space. Satellite view of Moscow, capital city of Russia. The city sits on the banks of the Moskva River. The older parts of the city are seen as a reddish brown area at centre. This is surrounded by pale-coloured suburbs. In many suburban parts are collections of rectangular shapes - large residential tower blocks formed into local groups or 'microregions'. These blocks house the bulk of Moscow's population. Moscow's international airport, Sheremetyevo, is seen at top left. At bottom left and top right are airports servicing the extensive domestic network. The data for this image were gathered by a Landsat satellite in 1984.
